Applications of Bioheat Transfer Simulations in Hyperthermia1

چکیده
The applications of mathematical simulations of tissue tem perature distributions in hyperthermia treatments are discussed in terms of four areas, comparative, prospective, concurrent, and retrospective thermal dosimetry. These four aspects of thermal dosimetry cover the range of hyperthermia applications of interest to clinicians, from comparative evaluation of compet itive heating modalities to individual treatment planning, through feedback control during a treatment and, finally, to posttreatment therapy evaluation. Mathematical simulations of hyperthermia treatments can play a significant role in each of these areas.

Key issues in bioheat transfer simulations for the application of cryosurgery planning.
The bioheat transfer simulation is undoubtedly the foundation for developing computerized tools for cryosurgery planning and analysis. While a large variety of techniques for bioheat transfer simulations are available in the literature of the past several decades, it is only their integration with clinical criteria and constraints which can make computerized planning a practical reality. This b...
متن کاملAn efficient numerical technique for bioheat simulations and its application to computerized cryosurgery planning
As a part of ongoing efforts to develop computerized planning tools for cryosurgery, the current study focuses on developing an efficient numerical technique for bioheat transfer simulations. Our long-term goal is to develop a planning tool for cryosurgery that takes a 3D reconstruction of a target region, and suggests the best cryoprobe layout. Toward that goal, a planning algorithm, termed "f...

متن کاملComputerized planning for multiprobe cryosurgery using a force-field analogy.
Cryosurgery is the destruction of undesired biological tissues by freezing. For internal organs, multiple cryoprobes are inserted into the tissue with the goal of maximizing cryoinjury within a predefined target region, while minimizing cryoinjury to the surrounding tissues. The objective of this study is to develop a computerized planning tool to determine the best locations to insert the cryo...
